Abbott and Beta Bionics A New Chapter in Diabetes Care
admin September 6, 2024 No Comments

Abbott and Beta Bionics are working together to make life easier and more efficient in keeping up with diabetes. That is through pairing Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus continuous glucose monitor CGM with the iLet bionic pancreas from Beta Bionics. This new system, in the fourth quarter of 2024, will be the first in the U.S. to couple the Libre 3 Plus with an automated insulin delivery system AID.

What is FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus?

Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus is a progressive continuous glucose monitor that tracks your glucose throughout the day. It sends accurate data instantly to a mobile app that makes life easier for anybody wanting to understand and manage their health more quickly.

What is Beta Bionics iLet?

The iLet bionic pancreas makes living with diabetes easier with its advanced insulin delivery system. It was FDA-cleared this May 2023, using an intelligent algorithm that will automatically change your insulin doses on your current weight. You will not need to set any settings or count your carbs; it will be taken care of by the system.

How Will They Work Together?

The latest collaboration will couple the iLet bionic pancreas with FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus CGM. In essence, that would provide users with choices with respect to CGMs on the iLet system for bringing more options and flexibility in diabetes management.

As the CEO of Beta Bionics, Sean Saint, said, “Beta Bionics has designed the iLet Bionic Pancreas to simplify lives and provide more convenience in diabetes management. Convenience entails allowing user choices.” This way, individuals have their choice and can tailor their diabetes care to the CGM they trust.

Benefits of the iLet System

The iLet bionic pancreas has several beneficial attributes:
No Manual Adjustments: As the system itself makes the adjustments, there is no need to make any manual adjustments for insulin delivery.

Ease at Mealtimes: You will not need to count carbs; simply ‘announce’ meals. Over time, the system will learn to adjust your insulin for you.

Less Hassle: All of your insulin dosing is managed by the iLet, so you won’t have to worry about correction factors or insulin-to-carb ratios anymore.

Other Abbott Collaborations

Abbott is also working on other diabetes management solutions. FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus is already working with Insulet’s Omnipod 5 in Europe. It is also compatible with Tandem Diabetes Care’s t: X2 system. And it is to team up with Medtronic to make CGMs for their delivery systems.

In the words of Jared Watkin, EVP of Abbott’s Diabetes Care, “Abbott is creating advanced health technologies that are making diabetes management easier and more effective. Our collaboration with Beta Bionics will deliver an easy-to-use, accurate system that helps users focus on life, not just diabetes.”

Conclusion

This has been the most significant step forward in the care of diabetes, whereby soon, Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus will be incorporated into Beta Bionics’ iLet bionic pancreas. The new system design will further enable people to monitor and manage the condition in a more convenient, more accurate, and more personalized way. With these novelties, people with diabetes will be enabled to live in a healthier and more balanced way.
